[Video, Monday Evening, Week 14] CMO's Log: Entry One

[It's shortly after Nem's message goes out that a new face appears on the network. Bones had awoken from his pod a couple hours previously, but had spent the time finding his pants and prowling around with a suspicious glower, trying to get his bearings and trying to place just what the hell sort of alien storage facility he's found himself shunted to.]

I don't know where the hell I am, or who the hell you people are, but if you need shelter or you need medical help, then I'm inside some sort of stasis facility and the walls here look good and thick.

The name's McCoy. Dr. Leonard McCoy.

...and we certainly don't have any extra-galactic colonies. Or do you just mean outside the Alpha Quadrant?

[What. The. Hell. says Bones' tone, but as the disembodied voice on the other end of the line is being helpful, he remains dialled back on the snark.]

I have some equipment with me that I could use to take some scans, but what I don't have is the sort of EVA equipment that would let me take them safely. Are there any medical or research facilities still standing, or did the war take them out too?

Titanic? Is that a metrotitan? [Probably not. He shakes his head.]

[Ah! That he can do!] Many of us awoke, all at once, in the ship--the one you woke in. We were apparently supposed to be used in their war...somehow. The ship is apparently a derelict from an old war between the people on this planet and another world. The war poisoned the planet, and those who wanted the war retreated inside the domes.

This was a long time ago.

Those in the domes cannot survive out here for long and we? We've only had one get inside the dome and she was...beaten horribly.

[His mouth flattens with that injustice.]

I am afraid I'm unfamiliar with that designation - it is entirely possible that we are from different timelines. Are you familiar with mass relay technology at all?

[One can almost hear the frown in her voice.]

As for medical facilities, there is a hospital in the settlement outside the ship, but it is both under-equipped and under-staffed.

[She pauses briefly.]

It is almost inevitable that someone will have either been caught out of range of shelter, or will decide the warnings do not apply to them. Would your equipment be able to isolate the active compounds in a human bloodstream?

[Ratchet. You remind him of Ratchet. You are Ratchet if Ratchet was a human.]

[Spock has arrived at a similar conclusion, although with a bit more proof. At least this Dr. McCoy seems similar enough for now, at least in temperament if not attire.]

There is... a medical facility of sorts, but hardly up to the tasks they are given. I am certain they would accept any help that was offered, even from yourself, Doctor.

Well then. [The 'even from yourself' twitches at Bones' lips, but he seems more interested in the situation than in exchanging another round of banter with Spock. For now.]

I'll head that was as soon as this fog clears. Just what other assistance are they looking for? You mentioned Jim was on a search party.

It's a ship that was supposed to be unsinkable. Went down in two miles of frigid water on her maiden voyage. Perfectly safe.

[But Wing's summary of events has him distracted from grousing about the many ways technology is out to get you, his eyes sharpening intently at the explanation.]

Has she received medical attention? Such that a planet like this can offer, anyway. And the dome-dwellers, you say they can't survive outside of them? Why is that?

[To be fair, while Leonard McCoy smirks, eyebrow-raises, smiles crookedly and often snorts, he rarely out-and-out laughs.]

But who would that be, then? Am I likely to have to wear a nametag?

Perfect. Great vacation spot you've got here. But sure, sure, I'll see what I can do. Isolating compounds isn't the problem, it's what you'd want me to do to any I find after that will take some work.

I'm a damn' good doctor. [Modest, too.] But I don't deal in miracles. I'll have to take a look and see what your hospital does have.

That doesn't sound very safe. [If he may disagree.]

She did, but you'll find our medical facilities rather...strained. Jim Kirk had told me it was far below what he was used to.

I don't know. He grew ill and died, and the Old City sages said that this was the way it was with their kind.

In terms of equipment, I gather that it is roughly equivalent to a 20th-Century Earth field hospital. There is unlikely to be anything on hand to treat more obscure ailments, although it may be possible to arrange something with Edmund, the local trader. The laboratory facilities are - rather primitive.

So your creators can make giant sentient robots, but can't program in the ability to detect sarcasm?

[Bones' eyebrows are raised at that, as he's drawn back into the discussion of the Titanic despite the conversational shift. But, after a long pause, he gets himself back on topic.

Well, on more important matters, there are a lot of reasons someone can die if they're pulled out of a closed environment. I can't get you any answers while I'm holed up in here, though.

I...uh. [Oh, no they have sarcasm. Wing is just too serious for his own good around humans. He bursts out laughing.] I'm sorry. I really should lighten up.

[Is that a hint?] I could fly--er, show you the way to the Old City?

[Voice]

20th Century. Field hospital. Wonderful. I suppose I should be grateful that they've at least developed germ theory and can think of equipment more complex than a trepanning chisel and a jar of leeches.

[He heaves a sigh, world-weary irritation concealing a spark of honest interest at a challenge.]

I'll see what I can do.

Probably. You're starting to remind me of our executive officer, and one Spock's quite enough.

[He squints visibly at the offer, measuring it, before coming down on the side of considering it genuine.]

That's kind of you, but I'm not going anywhere until this supposed fog clears. Last thing I need on a potentially hostile alien planet is to be off my head or coughing up my lungs or whatever this does.

I am very sure I do not want to know what would be done with the leeches.

[It's a little wary, like she's half expecting him to tell her anyways.]

I am also certain that the staff at the hospital will appreciate the assistance, once the fog has cleared.

Ah. Well. Just a uh- [Friend? He can almost hear Ratchet's cranky voice objecting to that.] a crewmate. He was our ship's medic. Ratchet. Just heh- you have a similar demeanor.

[What with him being based off of a version of you and everything. But that's meta, we don't talk about that. Shhh.]

I'd be glad not to know what they did with the leeches. That's unfortunately not the case.

[But, while shared pain may be lessened, (and while, honestly, he'd probably not be above using them if the situation was medically sound) Bones opts not to go into detail.]

I've never met a hospital that couldn't use extra hands, so I'll make my way there. What else should I know?

That's because any decent ship's medic has had a crash course in putting up with the medical idiocy of the people serving with them. Universal trait.

[The complaint has the tone of a well-worn one, more for style than out of actual substance.]

The people living in the settlement - it is typically referred to as the Old City - are in conflict with the residents of the dome to the north-east. Anyone attempting to approach their territory is met with a great deal of armed hostility.

Proven fact. I don't care if you're organic, synthetic or some strange cyborg in between, your medic's had to deal with seeing too many things coming back from away missions that he wishes he could forget.

But that's a relief. So long as there are some engineers around for you, anyways.

Armed how? Am I going to be trying to pull pieces of projectile weapons out of people, or am I dealing with phasers burning off half of somebody's face?

Phasers-? I am not familiar with that particular piece of technology - at least, not by that name. They use projectile weaponry, hand-held and platform-mounted both. And, occasionally, flamethrowers.

[Yeah, the way Ratchet is. They exchange snark a lot, but he knows the old bot cares. At least he thinks so.]

Ah, I think so. I'm not sure, actually. Wing has survived long enough here, though. So I suppose I'm not terribly worried.
