Right, well fun as it was to go off to that dead desert [Briar's face clearly indicates that he didn't like that desert at all], now that I'm back if I don't do anything useful Rosethorn'll hang me in the well the next time she sees me. [now Briar grins]

I can make medicines, and I'm good at growing things. [Briar grins again, amused at the sheer understatement of that sentence] Somebody around here's gotta need a gardener.

[Briar scowls at the mention of people destroying crops. He's no stranger to those kind of tactics either, but he'll never like anyone going around killing plants]

I'm keeping out of the city for now. I'm not walking into a plague-infested city unless I really need to.

[Paradoxically, the mention of plague-infested cities and avoiding them seems to perk Pepper up a bit. The reason comes clear in her answer.]

If that's your worry, don't be -- go to the hospital and get yourself vaccinated. If that's not something your world has, the simplest explanation is that it's a treatment that will prevent you from getting sick. It's just recently been made up specifically for this disease, which is why it wasn't rolled out earlier.

Keep it quiet -- it will take them a few days to roll out enough for everyone -- but keeping people healthy who've never been sick is a priority.

[Briar looks surprised that they have a vaccine already, and he cheers up considerably] Course my world has vaccines! My teacher, she's one of the experts on 'em. She helped make the magicked samples that they use for testing, and whenever a new plague comes round they always get her to help figure it out.

[He nodded, understanded the need to not cause a riot in the rush for the vaccine] You got a cure, too?

As much as there's a cure for any communicable disease, at least. I'm not a doctor, so I can't give exact details, but there's an effective treatment for both stages of the disease, so any individual catching it needn't get too sick.

[She looks a little wry as she reflects that ] I could wish they'd gotten it sooner. It's pretty nasty, and my own case of it was moreso. But while it's still active, I would say that it's safe to come in and get a vaccination. And then you don't have to worry about it and can focus on other things.

I'll be making sure to get myself down to that hospital then, quick as I can. [Briar grinned, feeling very happy to finally be able to go into the city. It's not that he minded being out with the plants, but he still didn't like sleeping on his own. In the city at least, there would be people around.]

You must've been lucky though, to get it so bad and still recover. Not everyone's so lucky. [A mournful expression flashed across his face for a moment, as he remembered his friend Flick, who'd died during the Blue Pox]

No, no they haven't been. [Pepper's agreement was a quiet thing, still troubled in her tone and expression, although she keeps those troubles to herself beyond that.]

I was a combination of lucky and in the company of just the right person with just the right knowledge. The pods we wake up in can, it seems, also be used to heal you. I was put into one in time.

[Briar frowns, a little confused] Those things can heal? Why didn't they put more people into those, then?

[Pepper's smile imperfectly masks lingering unease. Still, she answers him.]

Because... I was the first person it was tried on, so it was unknown if it would work until I came out of it again. As for now, it seems like the ship only has so much power. Using it to cure too many people might put the lives of those still in stasis at risk. That, and there's no guarantee if it would work on someone who didn't come from the ship.

Long story short, it's better to use medicine.

Like healers who only have so much magic - you don't have enough to heal everybody. [That at least he understood, even if the mechanics of how ship could do any of the things it did was still way beyond Briar.]

Well, least I can help with the medicine part. [Briar grins] I'm a bit late for this plague, but they'll always be something in the future.

Very much like that, in fact.

[Pepper's still not ready to believe that magic is something other than a previously unknown to science form of... something. Still, who is she to correct someone else's contextual framework? She nods confirmation, her smile losing its unease.]

If you're in need of supplies to go with that very cheerful outlook, come by the stores -- anyone in town should be able to direct you -- and we can work out a trade arrangement. Your skills should make that no problem at all.

Oh, I can definitely use some supplies. My shakkan needs pruning. And some gloves would be pretty nice as well. [Not so much for protecting his hands as for covering up the strange, moving vine tattoos on his hands and forearms. He knew that even when people knew about magic they found his tattoos odd, and in this world where some people didn't even think magic existed, well, that gave him all the more reason to not give people an excuse to stare]

More importantly though - you wouldn't happen to know of any spare garden patches, would you? I'll need to grow things somewhere after all! [Briar grins again]

I'll see you down here in a bit, then. And of course -- one of the nice things about the city being so low population for its size is that there's a lot of unused space.

If you want to dig a space on the edge of the current fields, I'm sure no-one would have a problem with that. Alternately, if you wanted to try a rooftop garden or repurposing an old park, that's an option too. Just find some earth nobody's currently using and claim it as your own.

I do so love things that are free for the taking.

And once I've got my patch, don't you worry about anyone nicking off with anything I'm growing for you. I've got plenty of ways to make sure no one steals from my garden. [This time, Briar's grin isn't quite as friendly.

If you can keep the Authorities from setting your vegetables on fire, I think you're going to be very popular.

[Briar scratches his head] Maybe I could stop them once, if I was nearby. Best thing to do is probably to try and make them look natural. Don't grow them all in the same place, or keep them inamoungst lots of native plants, that sort of thing. They won't know to attack if they don't know they're there.

I'm Briar Moss. And if you like, I can grow you some pepper to match your name too. [he gives her his most cheeky grin]

It's a nickname, but there aren't really many plants called a Virginia, so pepper, or peppers, would be lovely.

[Virginia Creeper aside, and just... no. Pepper dimples at him.]
