[He'd gone blank before, shut down in China, in Dean's office. He was too used to being shut down, waking up some place other than he last remembered.

[But this was...new. And unpleasant, even among a series of experiences that Alex would describe as less-than-pleasant. Because it wasn't his docking cradle he'd woken up in. At first he'd thought he'd been kidnapped, but there were no guards, and his weapons were just where he'd stowed them, fully charged. ]

This is Detective Ale--. Just Alex.

[The voice is slightly modulated, almost , but not quite, inhuman.]

I’m looking for a man. A Dr Dennett Norton. Five foot nine, Caucasian, mid-forties. No criminal history.

[You spend enough time on the force, and people seem to settle into categories like that.]

I can provide a list of known associates.

[A short list: did Norton have a family? Anything outside his work? He should probably know, after all this time.]

He’s….. I need him.

[He doesn’t want to say for what, at least just yet.]

It happens. [She takes as much stock of him as she can, from where she's standing and what little is visible on-screen.] You have very interesting armor.

"Do I want to know how bit a 'mathematical possibility' you're talking about?" Probably not. He's learning! Just...slowly. It's a lot to take in.

"I get the feeling my point of view is pretty limited." Because he's still just a cop from Detroit, when you get down to it, who just wants to watch hockey with his son, and hug his wife. Normal stuff. Not too much to ask for, he'd think.

"I'll look out for him." At least Nick Burkhardt is a normal sounding name. You know, compared to Skywalker and Trance.

A year? I can't...I can't be here a year.

[He's not sure how long his body can go without maintenance, for one thing. And Clara. David. Everything back home. He can't lose them, not again.]

How the hell do we do that?

Not sure if I should hope for it or not.

[Except Norton. He kind of needs him.]

We're mostly tryin' to get her self repair systems goin' these days. Know much 'bout engineerin'?

That's the common indecision, yes. On the hand it's nice to have faces you know, on the other...this place isn't always the most welcoming.

[That gets a sharp look, first of surprise then confusion.]

Oh. But I thought... [She trails off.] Are you a robot? [The question is genuine, slightly wondering. She's met a few here though it's still not something she's used to.]

Can't be much worse than Detroit.

[Says the new guy who hasn't been outside the ship yet. But still, Detroit was pretty rough.]

No. [It comes out a little sharp, at first, still raw from Sellars' insistence he was 'just a robot'.]

I mean, no. Not really. Just, well, mostly.

Who's 'we'?

[Yeah, he's really probably not grasping onto the right points here.]

I, yeah, I don't think Detroit's got, you know, facilities for a ship like this. Harbor. Whatever.

[He's a cop, not a rocket scientist. Which...apparently she is. ]

[What kind of name is Pepper Potts? Seriously.]

[A human one. As far as Garrus is concerned, most of them sound ridiculous.]

"I can't give you a exact estimate yet. There are to many unknown variables. My guess would be 8103:1. Which really isn't that bad." It wasn't at all in the millions. And she's beat those odds before. Thousands were easy.

"In the grand scope of the infinite and ever expanding universe? Yes. In the scope of your own existence? No." She probably meant that to be comforting.

(ooc: Oh! I forgot to mention. Trance, as a sun, tends to flare. Feel free if you ever want her flares to randomly mess with Alex's tech. Yay radiation.)

Right. Eight thousand to one. "Not so bad." He shrugged. "If you say so." It sounds pretty bad to him, but what's he going to do? Give up?

"So I'm...average for my kind. I'll take it." It did make him wonder what or who the hell he was talking to. Obviously other than way out of his league. "So, guess the question is, what are we doing to fix this?"

[If he hadn't spent months already with a computer in his head, getting Norton chatting to him like he was a 24 hour talk line, this whole thing would be more unsettling.]

I have never heard of 'Detroit'. The land I come from is most commonly known as the Enchanted Forest. And forgive me for not introducing myself at first: I am Fa Mulan.

[She can tell she said something wrong from his reaction, but she isn't sure what. For now she'll just stick to eyeing him warily until she can better figure it out.]

I admit that I don't understand. You can probably tell I'm not very familiar with such things.

Sounds like something from a kids' book.

[Part of his processor ran a search on 'Enchanted Forest'. Nothing. It did ring a vague echo of one of David's old storybooks, the kind he'd insisted he had outgrown just last year. Hnh. Probably some suburban housing development. They went for that kind of fanciful name.]

Murphy. Alex Murphy.

[He can still claim that name, at least.]

[He gives a wry laugh.]

Yeah, up till about nine months ago, I hadn't either. It was, you know, kind of sudden. Got in a...well, caught up in something. This is how they 'fixed' me.

Or a legend. Or a fairy tale.

[Now it's her turn to sigh.]

Well met, Alex Murphy. So you...this is not the way you used it be? Is it some kind of curse?

Yeah, or those. Both sound a lot better than Detroit.

Curse? [He snorts. ] It feels like it most days.

I used to be, you know, normal. A guy. Not...well, this.

[He raises his left hand, the mechanical one, the movement echoed by a hiss of pistons.]

Mostly me, Tony and Kaidan workin' on the ship. Lotta other folk do various jobs in town. Workin' with the local law enoforcement, farmin', shops, the hospital whatever they had the skills for.

[Wait, he'd said...]

Whatcha mean ya don't know how ya work?

It's not anywhere near a place called Storybrooke, is it? Your Detroit?

[She keeps asking that question. In all honesty she's not even sure why anymore. Would it make any difference if it was?]

I'm sorry. I can't even begin to imagine. Literally.

Only thing I have any skill for is the police. Unless you have another use for someone good at shooting things.

[He turns, hands raised to indicate his whole body.]

No. Nothing like that.

[He knew all the streets, all the suburbs of Detroit. Part of his job, his life, for so many years. ]

I couldn't either. But you'd be surprised what you'd do to be able to see your family again.

Well, there's police work. My husband works for the sheriff.

[At some point the captain was going to find that out and... well, be the captain.

But never mind that, that whole body... was amazing. And it shows on her face.]

Tony'll probably know a thing or two 'bout it. Might not be half bad with it myself, but he makes amazing armor.

No I wouldn't. [The response is automatic, knowing.] I went to war to save my father. Risked multiple kinds of death only to preserve his life.

And then when all was said and done, I gave up a title and fortune to try and come home again.
