[He'd gone blank before, shut down in China, in Dean's office. He was too used to being shut down, waking up some place other than he last remembered.

[But this was...new. And unpleasant, even among a series of experiences that Alex would describe as less-than-pleasant. Because it wasn't his docking cradle he'd woken up in. At first he'd thought he'd been kidnapped, but there were no guards, and his weapons were just where he'd stowed them, fully charged. ]

This is Detective Ale--. Just Alex.

[The voice is slightly modulated, almost , but not quite, inhuman.]

I’m looking for a man. A Dr Dennett Norton. Five foot nine, Caucasian, mid-forties. No criminal history.

[You spend enough time on the force, and people seem to settle into categories like that.]

I can provide a list of known associates.

[A short list: did Norton have a family? Anything outside his work? He should probably know, after all this time.]

He’s….. I need him.

[He doesn’t want to say for what, at least just yet.]

Trance gave Alex a smile. "I didn't say that. Clearly you wouldn't be average if you didn't wake up here. I believe you woke up here because you have a purpose. Falling through cracks in reality doesn't often happen. The odds of it happening to you and being saved? There's a reason you are here. A part you have to play. So no, I wouldn't say average."

He wanted to help? Well they could use all the help they could get. "Help by playing on your strengths. Whether that's repairing the ship or assisting the Authorities with law enforcement."

Nothing like that. "Refugee coordinator" is a better fit.

[It's a bit wryly amused. There's no Reapers here, but the displaced seem universal.]

The local government's experiencing a bit of upheaval - apparently there's no clear line of succession.

"Well, put me down for 'wait and see', then." He doesn't feel special, at least not in a good way. Unique, yes, but being the only cyborg in your hometown isn't really the good kind of special.

"Law Enforcement, then, probably. At least I know that. I presume the law's kind of the same all over." Maybe he can ratchet back citing people for jaywalking, though.

[She gets a look in her eye that reminds him of Norton, just a little less possessive.]

Locals. [It meant it wasn't just refugees here, people who 'fell through' some tear like Trance would have it.]

[He's been in hostile territory before. He could handle it. But a heads up would be good.]

[Nothing like waking up and feeling plunged into the middle of things and behind on all of them. He knew part of it was his programming, its insistence on solving things, enforcing the law. ]

The mayor was killed a couple weeks back. Ain't the first person to die the way he did, but it bein' him sent everythin' right crazy. No one's terribly clear on who's in charge, and a lot of folk ain't happy with... well, anythin' right now.

[Hi, have a new comer...who is going to die of his own glitching systems without maintenance. Surely just what everyone needed.]

Sounds dangerous. Do we have a safe place if things get rough?

"I'm sure there are books you can use to catch up if you ask the right people. I think Luke Skywalker does something with law enforcement, but to be honest I've tried to avoid him."

Like before, Trance and law enforcement, well, she was a bit skittish sometimes. Especially when being interviewed.

Chief Dean jumps to the top of his mind: he'd told her everything, and all that time, she'd been playing him.

"No! At least, not that I know of. He just, makes me a bit nervous. Law enforcement and I haven't had a cooperative past."

Cooperative to say the least. She had a record for theft. Lots and lots of theft. And then there was willingly antagonizing them.

"Are you a criminal?" She's not on his database, but no one is. "Because, well," he taps his chest, the DCPD logo embossed on the armor, "Kind of law enforcement, myself."

"Not in this universe." Trance smiled sweetly, and then arched an eyebrow. "Did you really expect me to answer that?" Even if he got hold of the criminal database in her universe, in it, well she looked different. For one, she was purple. And had a tail. And short blond hair.

Keeping explorers from stumbling into a hot zone. Apparently it's contaminated enough that anyone who heads inside is at risk for catching a lethal plague.

[There's a pause, and then he adds, sounding wryly amused,] I haven't felt like testing the theory. Once is enough.
