[He'd gone blank before, shut down in China, in Dean's office. He was too used to being shut down, waking up some place other than he last remembered.

[But this was...new. And unpleasant, even among a series of experiences that Alex would describe as less-than-pleasant. Because it wasn't his docking cradle he'd woken up in. At first he'd thought he'd been kidnapped, but there were no guards, and his weapons were just where he'd stowed them, fully charged. ]

This is Detective Ale--. Just Alex.

[The voice is slightly modulated, almost , but not quite, inhuman.]

I’m looking for a man. A Dr Dennett Norton. Five foot nine, Caucasian, mid-forties. No criminal history.

[You spend enough time on the force, and people seem to settle into categories like that.]

I can provide a list of known associates.

[A short list: did Norton have a family? Anything outside his work? He should probably know, after all this time.]

He’s….. I need him.

[He doesn’t want to say for what, at least just yet.]

Trance heard her comm go off and an unfamiliar voice chatter on it. It sounded like someone just woke up. Putting down her tools and plant mister she, ran out of Salvation's gardens and to the pod area.

"I don't recognize the name but maybe I could help you?" Trance popped over by the door, and stayed where she was. Just in case. For some reason some people were rather startled by her appearance.

"Do you know what's happened to you?"

In theory, Alex was the last person to be put off by someone else's appearance. He'd been upset enough at his own, when he'd woken up in Norton's lab. And there was part of him that thought this was a dream, still, some neurochemical glitch. One that was messing with his colorscale, because her skin tone wasn't matching what human normal. All his HUD gave him was [unknown: no threat] which was...not really helpful.

"Happened to me. Like worse than this?" He raised his left hand, the cybernetic one. "Something about a different planet." But his tone says 'but that can't be right.'

"Different reality actually, probably a different universe." This was where it got tricky, if they weren't used to that sort of thing. Trance took a couple of steps forward, when he didn't immediately scream and run for his life. Or pull a weapon on her.

"You fell threw a crack in reality. The ship caught you."She gave him what she hoped was a reassuring smile. "People are working on fixing it. So we can all go home. I'm Trance."

"A crack in reality." He was aware he was just repeating her words, but it was one of those things where he had to be hearing things wrong. This couldn't be a dream: he simply didn't have this much imagination.

He turned around, scanning the room again, as though he could see a crack in something. "Trance. Interesting name. Can I ask, uh, what you are?" If it was a dream, it wasn't rude, right? And if it wasn't, well, then he'd apologize.

"What I am? Trance Gemini." Trance replied with a bit of a smirk, as if that explained absolutely everything, her name, her species, what she was doing there. And unfortunately for the person standing opposite her, it was probably all he was going to get. Unless he preferred some more non-answers. She could get creative.

"Yes, a crack in reality. You fell threw." Why was this so hard for people to understand? "It's not here. You can't see it. You'll just have to trust me."

Right. That doesn't help at all. And his HUD readings aren't helping at all.

It was hard to understand because yesterday, he was in Detroit, and his biggest problem was the crime statistics, and now he was her, without the whole team of support he needed, on some different planet. Apparently. The CPU in his brain was absolutely refusing to make sense of it. "I trust you." Not that there's really much choice. "Whose ship is it? Are we prisoners?"

Yup, that was Trance. She was helpful.

"Good. This is Salvation. She crashed on the planet Verdana.To be honest I'm not quite sure which universe we're in, but I'm trying to narrow it down. We're not prisoners at all. Salvation just saved us. I was working on repairing her when I heard your call. On the comm. Now, what should I call you?"

Helpful enough, and better than nothing. "How many universes are there?"

That already struck him as the kind of question he didn't really want an answer to, since the obvious answer was 'more than the one you know' and that was plenty to take in.

Another clue: she's repairing a ship.

"Alex. Just Alex. The rest, I guess, doesn't mean anything here."

"More than you could comprehend." She really didn't mean that as a slight. But, he was human. Or, sort of human. Well, he wasn't a Celestial Avatar, he wasn't born to traverse space time and the universes, and what was between them.

"How do you know what matters if you don't give it a chance. You don't know what universe you're in. It might matter. It might not." Trance took the opportunity to scold the newcomer. Maybe she should take it a bit more easy on him.

"Alex what? Why don't you tell me a little bit about yourself while I show you around?"

He doesn't take it as a slight, it was just confirmation, really.

He shrugged at the chiding. "Detective, Detroit Police. Neither of which, I imagine, mean much here." It felt like he was unmoored; first, he'd lost himself, his body, and now he'd lost everything that gave this new body meaning.

"Not necessarily. I believe you wouldn't be here if you didn't have a purpose. You fell threw time and Salvation saved you for a reason. Perhaps that reason is your police work. Maybe you could be some help here. I'm sure the Authorities would love to have you help out. There have been a bit more fighting here than normal."

Trance gestured to the other pods. "Some of them are empty, some of them aren't. People seem to awaken randomly." But there was usually nothing random about it. Just because she couldn't control it didn't make it random.

"We have another Detective here. Portland I think. I doubt it's the same universe, but at least it sounds like the same planet. Earth right?"

"So something happened to my wor--where I'm from, and I'm the only one that got saved?" He was trying not to think about it, but it kept pushing to the top of his consciousness. Norton wasn't here, Clara probably wasn't.

He was following her as she led through bay. She seemed unfazed by his heavy steps, uncanny movements. Another hint of something, maybe. He doesn't want to believe he'd be taken and not them, but, well, $2.6 billion in development, he probably was a little special.

"Portland Oregon?" He thought. It could be the same. "Pretty far from Detroit. I mean, by Earth standards." Which he was already piecing together probably was pretty small.

"Not necessarily. There is the mathematical possibility that your world is just fine, and it was just you who fell through the crack. However, there is also the possibility that others fell through and are here, awake or asleep, or that your world is cut off from the slip stream on a quantum level."

Even if that was the case, she was pretty sure she could find a way back for him. Jumping between universes, that was easy. Baking a cake? Not so much.

"Time and space is relative. Just like age, it all depends on your point of view. " He was getting it. He'd be okay. "You should meet him. The other detective. Nick Burkhardt."

"Do I want to know how bit a 'mathematical possibility' you're talking about?" Probably not. He's learning! Just...slowly. It's a lot to take in.

"I get the feeling my point of view is pretty limited." Because he's still just a cop from Detroit, when you get down to it, who just wants to watch hockey with his son, and hug his wife. Normal stuff. Not too much to ask for, he'd think.

"I'll look out for him." At least Nick Burkhardt is a normal sounding name. You know, compared to Skywalker and Trance.

"I can't give you a exact estimate yet. There are to many unknown variables. My guess would be 8103:1. Which really isn't that bad." It wasn't at all in the millions. And she's beat those odds before. Thousands were easy.

"In the grand scope of the infinite and ever expanding universe? Yes. In the scope of your own existence? No." She probably meant that to be comforting.

(ooc: Oh! I forgot to mention. Trance, as a sun, tends to flare. Feel free if you ever want her flares to randomly mess with Alex's tech. Yay radiation.)

Right. Eight thousand to one. "Not so bad." He shrugged. "If you say so." It sounds pretty bad to him, but what's he going to do? Give up?

"So I'm...average for my kind. I'll take it." It did make him wonder what or who the hell he was talking to. Obviously other than way out of his league. "So, guess the question is, what are we doing to fix this?"

((OOC: Oh wow that could be super fun! We definitely need to do that!))

Trance gave Alex a smile. "I didn't say that. Clearly you wouldn't be average if you didn't wake up here. I believe you woke up here because you have a purpose. Falling through cracks in reality doesn't often happen. The odds of it happening to you and being saved? There's a reason you are here. A part you have to play. So no, I wouldn't say average."

He wanted to help? Well they could use all the help they could get. "Help by playing on your strengths. Whether that's repairing the ship or assisting the Authorities with law enforcement."

"Well, put me down for 'wait and see', then." He doesn't feel special, at least not in a good way. Unique, yes, but being the only cyborg in your hometown isn't really the good kind of special.

"Law Enforcement, then, probably. At least I know that. I presume the law's kind of the same all over." Maybe he can ratchet back citing people for jaywalking, though.

"I'm sure there are books you can use to catch up if you ask the right people. I think Luke Skywalker does something with law enforcement, but to be honest I've tried to avoid him."

Like before, Trance and law enforcement, well, she was a bit skittish sometimes. Especially when being interviewed.

"Why? There something wrong with him?"

Chief Dean jumps to the top of his mind: he'd told her everything, and all that time, she'd been playing him.

"No! At least, not that I know of. He just, makes me a bit nervous. Law enforcement and I haven't had a cooperative past."

Cooperative to say the least. She had a record for theft. Lots and lots of theft. And then there was willingly antagonizing them.

"Are you a criminal?" She's not on his database, but no one is. "Because, well," he taps his chest, the DCPD logo embossed on the armor, "Kind of law enforcement, myself."

"Not in this universe." Trance smiled sweetly, and then arched an eyebrow. "Did you really expect me to answer that?" Even if he got hold of the criminal database in her universe, in it, well she looked different. For one, she was purple. And had a tail. And short blond hair.

"Think you just did answer it." He managed a grin. "Guess what matters is, what are you in this universe?"

'This universe'. It all still sounds a little weird.

She gave him a little look, eyes sparkling a bit. What was she? "Trance Gemini." Again, yup, that answered everything. Truth be told, almost the entirety of the Andromeda crew were criminals. They went from point A to point G in ways that others couldn't. And Trance needed that.

"Sometimes criminals are the only way to get something done."
