This is Dylan Hunt. My first officer, Gaheris Rhade, left to explore the Wasteland three days ago and I haven't had a communication from him since. I'm going after him. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, from spare water cans to take with me to advice on your personal favorite desert survival techniques.

Nap between noon and three, at least. Make sure you bring at least one good blanket, deserts can get bitterly cold at night. You'll want to search at night, at least when the moon is up enough to look for him. Don't use artificial light when it is, you'll just wreck your night vision. Wear light colors, and make sure you have a hat, something to keep the sunlight off your head.

[Daniel lets Dylan into the place he's fixed up, gestures him towards the table. Spread over it is a large, rough-shaped piece of vellum, inked carefully with small, precise drawings and instructions written in a cramped, spiky hand - all desert plants, showing which parts are edible, which store water, which are poisonous.]

I was going to send the information to your phone, but given that we can't reach Rhade, there's no guarantee the things will still work out there.

This won't cover everything you might find, but it should be a good guide.

[Dylan looks at the drawings. This is potentially life-saving knowledge. During every break on his trek he's going to study this information and commit as much of it to memory as he can, just in case something happens to the vellum.]

I don't think we've talked before. Daniel, isn't it? [He's aware of the other ship passengers, even if he hasn't had a chance to meet them all yet.]

[He cups a handful of ashes from a cold brazier in the corner, and blows them over the ink to make it finish drying, so it won't smudge. He keeps his eyes on the task.]

Rhade was one of the first people I met here, before we even found our way off the ship. I hope you find him.

[After a pause, he starts dusting the ashes off carefully.]

I lived in a desert climate for a long time. I would come with you, but there are people here I need to watch out for.

I hope I can, too. He's strong; he's probably fine. [Said as much to reassure himself as anything.] But in case he isn't... In a place like that, all it takes is one injury or one accident for things to go very bad.
