First Report [Video]
[By now, Carver and his sister have been frightened enough times by the bizarre, talking magical books that appeared in their possessions. They speak in voices and change every day, so it took some tinkering before they were able to figure out how, precisely, to work them.
But now they have. Sort of.
Carver's face appears in the image, glaring, focused in entirely too close for him to know what he's doing with it. He taps on it a few times and once he can see himself, tries to adjust so he's a little easier to see.]
Hello? Is anyone there? Can anyone hear me? [It statics, because he's yelling into it.] Maker! Damn this blighted thing...
[Giving up on trying to make the communicator work, he goes back to the subject at hand.]
If anyone can hear this, my name is Warden-Ensign Carver Hawke. My sister and I- I don't know how we got here, but we're here. We came out of that- that metal building back there.
We're holed up in a little shack not far from that metal building, on the south side of the mountain. I don't know if anyone else is out there, but if they are--
[He coughs, clears his throat, and his voice turns all business.]
I'm going to go ahead and assume this is somewhere in the Anderfels, so you'll probably know what a Grey Warden is. So in that case I'd like to request some food and supplies for both myself and my sister, who is not a Warden, but you're going to be damned bloody sorry if you refuse to her.
And if nobody else is out there... well, then we're in a pile of shit, aren't we...

[And... what the void is she talking about now? Maybe all the healer's shrieking about her losing her mind was true.]
No, you must be confused. I'm with our sister. She was in the "ship" as well. Garrett's not the champion of anything but getting his own stupid ass in trouble.
no subject
You have two siblings.
[Why hadn't she known that? And she recalls that the brothers did not particularly see eye-to-eye. The title will be dropped for now.]
Was this sister in Kirkwall as well?
[She couldn't have been. The Champion couldn't have managed to hide a sister. Not with all the interest Kirkwall had in him.]
no subject
Ugh, obviously he wasn't thinking. Now he needs to carefully wheedle the whole "sister is a mage" thing out from around the Knight-Commander. As though he already wasn't fucking sick of doing it for Garrett.
At least Bethany is likely to be subtle.]
No. Our sister Bethany died when we were fleeing Ferelden, but... but she's here now, somehow.
no subject
[That sounds like
blood magicnecromancy to her, but with what this place has already proven itself capable of there is a chance of other causes. At least with those who had been brought back it was... rather obvious. Rot was not easily hidden. One glance was all it would take, though surely he was wise enough to not let emotion stand in the way if this Bethany was indeed like that.]Bring yourself and her to the settlement. I would hear your version of events in Kirkwall.
[And so she falls back into the easy pattern of giving orders to those from home.]
no subject
[Oh, what? Bring her to Meredith? Uhhh how about no?]
I- ah. The settlement is to the east, someone said. What sort of settlement is it?
no subject
[Clearly being a Warden had slowed him. Delayed reaction on Templar and now this...
None the worse for the wear, though. So perhaps it was simply a matter of time. Sebastian didn't know of the Chantry, Bethany had not yet died. Was that possible? Meredith didn't have enough information to know. But she would take his word for it, and dismissed the sister as inconsequential for the moment. Later she'd need to find out more; a sibling of the Champion was no small matter. But there were other matters to attend to.]
Poor. They have suffered many attacks and it shows. But there is shelter and food, and some who know a few details of this world, and so it suffices.
What occurred most recently in the city, to the best of your knowledge?
[Not that there were Wardens in the city at the moment, so far as she knew.]
no subject
[Boy, it's sad that talking to a Templar still makes him this nervous. Only now it's Bethany instead of Garrett in danger of the Knight-Commander. Carver's mostly pissed that she's managing to tongue-tie him so very easily.
He clears his throat and immediately tries to retake that commanding tone he used before.]
Well, it's better than sitting out here starving in a shack. We'll make our way there shortly.
I wouldn't know, Ser. I'm with the Wardens. I haven't been back to Kirkwall in three years.
no subject
There are shacks out there? Does it appear to be another settlement, though abandoned, or is it just the one?
[She sighs at his lack of details. They're in a place that's full of confusion, and this is less than helpful. But patience was needed. Still not hers.]
I know the Wardens have not been there in some time. What had occurred when you were last there? Do you recall a Qunari uprising?
no subject
[And what little food there was here is gone now. They'll have to head for the settlement shortly.]
The Qunari uprising? You mean all those hornheads down by the docks? I think we'd have heard about that.
no subject
How many years has it been since you and the-- [Carver didn't know Garrett as the Champion. It wasn't the sibling rivalry. That realization stopped her mid-sentence, and she rephrased her question.]
How long has it been since you and your brother reached Kirkwall? [She couldn't call him Hawke, there were too many Hawkes, and 'the apostate' was reserved for Anders.]
no subject
Around four years. Though I was only around for one and a half of them. I joined the Wardens after the Deep Roads expedition.
no subject
Your brother is not here. But you will find that he has changed somewhat in the years that you missed.
[In fact, he's almost tolerable for a mage.]
There are others present whom you may or may not be familiar with. They were his companions, after all. Vael, Aveline, Fenris, and the apostate. The First Enchanter is also here, but I cannot see that being relevant to you.
[Never a name for Anders, nope.]
no subject
Yes, I know most of them. [Vael who?]
Apparently you knew me better in your version of events, Knight-Commander.
no subject
[Maybe the taint addled him. Maybe being in the deep roads so much addled him. Wardens. Who knew? She'd briefly conversed with some before, but this was a little different. Where was Cullen when she needed him?]
no subject
[Cut the guy some slack, Meredith, he's had a long week of ridiculously impossible things happening to him. QED: dead sister.]
I did consider it for a while.
no subject
You came to us when your brother left on the Expedition that would reshape your family's fortune. I cannot say what your reasons were.
[In other words, sorry, but you weren't that important until your apostate brother became untouchable.]
But you served us well.
no subject
Well. Good to hear, I suppose.
no subject
[He doesn't sound particularly interested, but she'll leave the possibility there for him to consider, in case.]
To be a Templar is to protect and watch, and there is need of such here.
no subject
Wardens protect and watch as well, and I wouldn't plan on doing anything less.
no subject
Good.
The settlement is not hard to miss. East, remember.
[Because you might forget it. And then she turns off her book-device-thing.]
no subject
Thank you, Knight-Commander.
