[Audio clicks on, there's a sharp intake in breath, before Ruby talks]

Uh, hello? Can... Can anybody hear me? I don't really know if this thing is even on right. Just kind of hit random numbers and hoped for the best.

David? Belle? I'd ask for Granny but I'm still teaching her how to use her crappy nokia flip, I don't think she'll get the handle of an open broadcast network ever.

Is this another Realm? Oh who was that guy...

[there's a snap of fingers that's faint, before her voice is loud again]

Jefferson! I don't think I got here by magic, but if I did, maybe he's around! Hey! Anyone know a weird guy with a top hat?

...If anyone is even listening to this, which they're probably not. Guess I better start walking.

[Have an exhausted werewolf, Ruby. Lyall was about ready to head to bed for the day (finally) when he heard this, so he's giving her a response. A tired-sounding but still polite response.]

I do own a top hat, miss, but I'm afraid my name is not Jefferson. I am Randolph Lyall, and I do not believe there was magic involved in bringing you here. You awoke in a glass and metal pod, am I right?

Oh, I guess someone did hear me.

[a pause]

Uh, yeah. Magic makes more sense than kidnapped by aliens, though. [and oddly enough she is completely serious about that.]

This is a rather open network, I'm afraid. It is even monitored by a rather unpleasant organization inside that domed city. As for your arrival... kidnapped by aliens may in fact be the long and short of it. Though whoever those aliens are is still a mystery.

[He sounds apologetic about the whole thing. It is a tad difficult to hear, he knows.]

Do you need a guide down to the city, miss? Someone could be sent to show you around.

Well, whoever they were, their interior decorator should be fired.

[It's unsettling, but Ruby has been through enough that she isn't that easily rattled.]

I don't want to trouble anyone. I can find my way, I'm pretty good at that.

Come down the mountain towards that ruined city you see there. The center of the city has been largely rebuilt, and anyone can direct you to the Flop-- temporary housing until you find somewhere you would prefer to stay. There are basic food supplies there.

[There's a bit of a smile in his voice when he adds,]

Welcome to Verdana, miss. Do be careful what you say on the network, and there's a bit of a plague running through the city, but other than that it's not a bad place.

Okay, I could sm- uh, see people, I kind of figured that was the way to go but-

What do you mean, plague? Like, capital P plague or just, a crazy bout of flu?

[If he'd been in wolf form, his ears would have perked. However, he doesn't actually comment on it. He'll run into her in person eventually, and that's safer to discuss things like slips of the tongue that might actually mean things.]

Capital P, I'm afraid. This is an engineered form of an actual plague from Europe in the middle ages. If you are prone to catching illnesses easily, actually, best you avoid the central parts of the city. There are some usable buildings further out, though not many.

...Oh. Uh, yeah I don't... really know if I'd say I'm prone to getting sick easy? Probably average human immune system, but I've had all my shots. [Suddenly that phrase is way funnier to her than it used to be, but she manages to keep from snorting aloud]

I'll take my chances, I guess. I've gotta be here for a reason, and hiding has never really worked out for me.

Then your help will be welcome, if you want to offer it. There aren't very many hands to go around.

[And he'll have another person to perhaps worry over. Ah, well. He's used to it.]

[She laughs a little at the observation about her sounding funny]

Uh, yeah. You could say that. My life went from being stuck in a dull little town to something... very different.

Dull little town? I suppose that does make this little excursion a something more adventurous than what you are used to.

[ She bundles up in her cloak and gets off the bed, temporarily off-screen as she gets on her boots. ] I want to meet you in person! May I?

Well, things kind of got shaken up just before I got here, but... that's a whole other thing.

[She blinks, before smiling a little]

Uh, yeah okay. I'm on my way from the ship to somewhere called "The Flop?"

I am inside! I do not need my boots after all, since I will greet you at the door.

[ Aaaand she's already up and at the front door waiting. ]
