[When the video snaps on, there's a face that might be familiar to some, and once she speaks that voice is fairly unmistakable to anyone who knows Shepard.]

I meant to do this after I first learned about my... predecessor, but with everything that's been going on, my priorities got realigned.

My name is Commander Jane Shepard, Alliance Navy. I know there was a woman here before claiming the same, and as far as I can tell, it's true in both cases, though I'm told we don't look much alike.

I don't expect anyone who trusted the other Shepard to immediately trust me, nor do I want that. I'll do everything I can to help here, but don't expect me to be like her. The way I've heard it, we differ in more than just appearance.

[She shifts, giving the camera a brief smile]

All the same, I hope you're willing to give me the time of day.

Why wouldn't we? We're all refugees here. If we don't trust each other, how can we stand together?

That's a... great way to look at things, but I've been around too many stubborn idiots who don't like playing nice even when the chips are stacked against them to think that way.

Well, I hope you are willing to trust me, Commander Jane Shepard.

The woman who was here before you was a brave leader. We all mourn her loss.

[Have one of the hospital doctors, looking harried and just as clearly ignoring a directive to sleep, damn it, in favour of checking the network. Bones has likely been spotted during her hospital visits, in a whirl of motion and snark moving between one patient and the next.]

Well, I didn't meet the last one, so tell me just what a Commander of the Alliance Navy does and we'll go from there.

Generally speaking? Bark orders and lead ground investigation teams when needed. Specifically, I served on a number of different ships as XO, before obtaining my own command two and a half years ago. [the look on her face says she could probably go on for a good two hours about all the details but she doesn't really want to.]

Oh, Jim's going to love you. And I'm going to love watching him crash and burn. [The answer of 'when is Leonard McCoy too tired for snarky amusement'? Never. His eyes, though tired, do shade with a little respect, one military representative to another.]

Starfleet would've made you a captain to go with the command. But that's there, not here, so my next question is what do you want to do to help?

I actually received a promotion with the command, but it was outside of Alliance parameters, so tacking on another title wasn't really necessary. It's just more people around here seem to recognize "Commander" better than they do "Spectre."

[And honestly, after explaining what a Spectre was to more than two people, she got kind of tired of it.]

As for what I can do to help, a lot of what I do is solving problems. Which generally includes shooting people, but also sometimes includes recovering information or protection detail.

Well, that's definitely something to start with. Dr. Solus and I have a site to check out, might lead to a break in this plague business if it has the equipment we'd need. I've seen how good a shot he can be, but I'd rather not have another Authority bullet creasing my ass if I can help it.

[On closer study, Bones does appear to be sitting a little gingerly. The bullet may not be a mere hyperbole.]

How do you feel about field trips, Spectre-Commander?

[Shepard smirks at that]

To be honest, sitting still isn't really my thing, so field trips suit me just fine.

Good to hear it. My CO's out trying to help keep the quarantined group from getting eaten by the wildlife, so it would be handy to have someone else's along.

[Granted, the way in which Bones says this makes it seem less like he's expecting orders and more that commanding officers do useful things he doesn't have to do, thereby letting him focus on interesting things like medical science.]

Solus, Stark and I will be heading out Wednesday along with the flight-capable one of the two giant robots running around. Think you can survive us?

Solus is one of mine, and honestly if I could survive him, I'm pretty sure I could survive anyone.

And here I thought Stark would be the handful.

[Bones, of course, being a perfect angel. He gives her a quick nod.]

Welcome aboard then. Still feeling healthy, no need to try and tie you to a bed like some of your other people?

Just don't get in his way when he's onto something, and you'll be fine.

[she's mostly joking.]

I'm fine so far. Probably all the colony-raised flu bugs over the years. Or the several billion credits worth of cybernetics.

I noticed that. I'm sure on board a ship he'd drive me right up the wall, but he's pretty much what we need, right now.

[His eyebrows raise as he processes that several-billion-credit line.]

And you do realize that I'm going to be on your case until I can get a few scans of those, right? I refuse to be left ham-handed when you inevitably get dragged in here for me to patch back together.

The thought had crossed my mind, but I figured it could wait, what with the plague and all.

Well, once Solus and I get this sorted out, be advised I'll be after you with a tricorder.
