We've found the missing hunters.

[Nem's voice sounds incredibly weary.]

I'm sure some of you wanted some resolution on that - mystery. They're deceased.

[There's a brief pause.]

I ask that you remain in the southern section of the city for the time being. There's no need to antagonize the Outer Authorities.

[Authorities, is it? Lyall is a little disturbed. Why kill a hunting party? There's no sense in it.]

Your pardon, Mister Nem. Where were they found? May I see the place?

You may see it, as long as you don't do anything foolish.

[He doesn't really sound like he thinks there's much hope of that. You people cause so much trouble.]

I am only going to look, I assure you. I would simply like to determine how and when the bodies were left.

Before I go... Mister Nem, can you think of any particular motivation the Authorities would have for harming a hunting party? They should have been far from the dome, shouldn't they?

[And yes, he knows this is an unsecured channel. If Nem has nothing to hide, there should be no trouble saying as much.]

They weren't left any more than a day ago. And I'm sure you've seen the patrols flying over - keeping away from the dome doesn't guarantee safety, it just diminishes the risks.

[Lyall decides it probably is in his best interests not to question further, though he still finds it utterly random and purposeless that the Authorities are attacking unthreatening food-gathering parties....]

This may appear odd to you, Strange Sir, but though I know not these people, I request that they be given a proper burial.

Their families will arrange for the disposal of their bodies.

As they should. However, I mean there should be remembrances.

If I can swing a way to keep them cool, would the families be willing to hold off a few days for me to get back and do an autopsy?

I know you're frequently busy, but if you could teach one or two of our own how to determine cause of death, I'd - appreciate it. Between the raids and the plague, we've lost our experts.

Solving the power drain on the ship is critical enough that I don't want to pull people off it unnecessarily, but rigging up refrigeration in a space on board it shouldn't take too much of their time.

I'll put out a call. And sure. You folks are less inclined to squeamishness than others I've met, so I can show them the ropes if you send them to me.

So then it was the Outer Authorities that were responsible for their deaths?

That's the most likely conclusion, yes.

I'm sorry to hear that. It being wild animals or the elements would make them no less dead, but it's always more sinister when a direct hand is involved.

Sinister. That's certainly one word for it. It was a warning.

To the survivors in the Old City, from our would-be overlords inside the dome? Warning us against what?

Stepping outside our place. It's clear enough, if you've lived here your entire life. What I don't know is what provoked it, this time.

My guess is being someplace they weren't supposed to be. Not that it makes it any more right.

That is quite unlikely.

[He doesn't bother to touch on right and wrong - discussing morality is not, in this case, helpful.]

How so? I can't think of any other likelier reason.

There's no reason for them to have ventured into the Dome's perimeter at all, let alone without any of their supplies.

Perhaps there are other areas then that the Outer Authorities consider sacrosanct.

They do perform patrols after all. What purpose could keeping an eye on our movements have if there's nothing that they're guarding?

Keeping fools from attempting to lead a rebellion when they have no idea how to do it. [There's a bit of an edge there - the last time people from the ship Got Ideas, it was his people who suffered.]

There's nothing they value in the mountains. There never has been.

[He pauses, sighs.]

I've lived in this city my entire life - trust me when I say it isn't as simple as tresspassing.

If it is as you say, I must yield to your experience.

[She doesn't like this. Any of it. There's too much she doesn't know and feels like she should. But this is not the time or place, and Nem possibly not the person to discuss it with.]

As I said earlier, I'm sorry to hear of the death of the hunters. If possible, please do let me know if there's anything else I may do to be of aid.
