Thursday, Week 54 [Video]

[Luke's smug, grinning face appears on the video feed. He is, in fact, on his honeymoon. But don't worry, he made sure he was fully clothed before beginning the feed. Oh, and he's making sure that Kaylee isn't in the background just in case she's still naked somewhere...]

Well, it's been five days and no incidents. I don't mean to jinx it, I'm just curious to see who's lost the bet so far.

[Luke is visibly silenced for a split-second, then he grins and ducks his head.]

[He seems to think on this for another second or two. Then he looks around to make sure Kaylee isn't within earshot.]

... Give it a year and a half. Maybe.

Oh, believe me. We've gotten plenty of reminders on that front.

Still, I dunno... [He pretends to glance around casually] Kaylee could come bounding in at any moment telling me she wants to make babies right this second and you know I couldn't say no to her. [He shrugs, smirking.]

That's the fun of betting, Kerra. You really don't know what's going to happen.

[Because if his friends are really going to continue to bet on his major life events, he's going to toy with them a bit.]

Well, I'm more than willing to take my chances that you're both not kriffing dumb enough to try and raise a child in this mess.

But if you do, I'll gladly hand Jansen some credits. And I'll even help paint the nursery.

[Luke's smile fades a bit. He doesn't reply to that first comment. He knows that everyone else here is still hopeful about being able to go home someday. And he knows that for him, Kaylee, and Wes... home isn't an option and never will be. They're clones. Copies of their original selves. If they manage to get away from Verdana they'll simply go back to Mayfield. So if now isn't the proper time to start a family then when else?

He honestly never thought there'd be a problem with it. Of course, he did grow up on Tatooine. His idea of the proper place to raise children tends to be pretty different from that of most other people who dream of sidewalk chalk and white picket fences. Scorching desert? Krayt dragons? Tusken Raiders who abduct people in the night? Bounty hunters? Crime lords? Sounds like fun! Relatively speaking, Verdana should be a cakewalk.]

I'm holding you to that.

[He's smiling again and he gives her a meaningful look. He and Kaylee have talked about having a family before and darned if anyone or anything here is going to stop them. Get your paint bucket ready, Kerra.]

[That flicker of emotion in Luke kills the teasing attitude in Kerra. She's figuring that she's hurt his feelings, and that wasn't really the intent. If he really was planning on having a family, then what right does a bitch like her have to say about it? Kriff, what right does she have to talk about kids at all. She's the messed up, stupid one here, not him. She's the one with no real future, no chance at a family, plus a dozen reasons never to have kids, and she damn well knows it. But if a friend truly wants a family, then she'll do everything she can to make sure the kid's happy and well cared for.

She forces a smile, a much gentler and more somber one, and nods.]

I know you will. I meant it too. Good luck with that, Luke.

[Just give her a few months warning.]

[Luke laughs and shakes off the mental image of Artoo rolling around on the floor of a swimming pool with his periscope peeking above the surface. Or, even more comical, floating around on a raft.]

Right. You know, as much as I love my little droid I hope he loses too. You can even tell him I said that.

Oh, I hope they do, too. But I thought the bet was on a crisis interrupting the honeymoon. Everything's been quiet out here.

And I don't believe in fate so if something happens it happens and we'll deal with it.

That-- [he points a finger at the comm device to indicate just how serious he is] --will happen over my dead body. [He hopes his meaning is clear.]

[What might happen over his dead body is pretty much exactly what she's worried about, but it wouldn't do to say so. And she does appreciate his obvious devotion to Kaylee.]
