Stop making it sound like 'the cat' wasn't you the whole time. It was you. You didn't like that I was still mad at you so you cheated. It wasn't just to make me feel better and you know it.

It's times like this when you really do seem like a god, Loki. The kind that frak mortals over because they're selfish little shits who always want to get their own way.

[She chuckles mirthlessly.]

[ And he steps into existence, behind her, without fanfare or sound. ]

And what virtue is there in this? We may say the same words at a distance.

[Kara spins around at the sound of his voice and before she let herself think the better of it, she slaps him hard across the cheek. Be thankful she didn't use a closed fist, Loki.]

Because I can't do that at a distance.

[ And he gapes at her, stunned, truly. For all that he knew about her nature, he hadn't expected her to react with such violence. Not against him, not when she referred to him (even mockingly) as a god. ]

[Kara's shocked that he's shocked, all things considered. After all, most guys when they get smacked in the face know they deserved it on some level, even if Starbuck's a little more slap-happy than most gals.

Now that she's done it, she's kinda lost as to what to do or say next. Better to put it on him.]

[ You hit me is terribly obvious, I'm sorry is too much.

He touches his cheek. ]

[ To admit it aloud, for the first time. ]

[She's let him see her with her guard down. That's the scariest part. She never lets people in unless they've earned it and are invited, damn it.]

[What has she thought? That he might treat her or see her differently? What a crock. What a fool she's been. She doesn't finish her thought out loud, just bites down hard on her bottom lip, glaring at him.]

[It isn't meant to go like this. He's supposed to bite back, not look like a godsdamned kicked puppy. She refuses to feel bad. To feel guilty for how she's reacted. It's probably just another manipulation. But she doesn't like the way her stomach's suddenly all twisted up in knots now.]

Maybe it did. But you know what? It would've meant more if it had been you who'd tried.

[ He dismisses that without considering it. Who would want comfort from him? From Loki. ]

[He's probably right, but it didn't happen so it can't be proven.]

It feels more honest, then. More real. [She lets out a sharp huff of frustration and then shakes her head.] Look, it's something you're gonna have to figure out for yourself. I'm not your sponsor on how not to act like a total dick. In case you haven't noticed? I'm pretty much a total bitch myself.

[Now she wants to laugh. At herself. At the situation. What is it about this guy that rattles her cage so much.]

[ A strange look crosses his face. ]

Cats, contrary to what you may believe, don't know how to lie.

[ And he turns away, summoning shadows, ready to teleport away. ]

[Her brow furrows as she tries to process what Loki's telling her. That he'd been revealing something of himself to her too, even if she hadn't known it at the time? But still, there's a difference between not being able to lie at all and making the conscious choice not to lie to someone when you can.

By the time Kara's figured out what she's gonna say in return, he's already slipped away. Having named his cat-form Shadow seems so frakking fitting now.]
