[the video feed turns on, and a giant, curious yellow eye stares back, accompanied by a deep, rumbling noise that sounded a bit like a cat's purr. Off in the distance comes a young man's voice talking in Norse - although thanks to the communicator's translation, there's an easy English text version popping up]

Toothless, what are you doing with that…[there's a crash, as the voice has apparently just dropped something]...oh gods, it's a magic book.

[the giant eye twists away, as Toothless lifts his head up to look inquisitively off at something to the side - the source of the voice, presumably. The angle is strange, and all you can see is part of his head, but it's clear enough that Toothless is covered in black scales, and big.]

Okay, okay…Toothless, just come over here, okay buddy? [Toothless rumbles softly, but takes a step away from the book, and out of view.] That's it, come on…let's get away from the magic, probably cursed book…oh gods, why me…

Thor?! Oh gods...I mean...um...I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to summon you...please tell me you're not trapped in the book...

[Thor can't see it, but Hiccup is inching closer to the book, ever so slightly]

No no. You did not summon me at all. I merely heard your voice, and thought I would say hello. I am actually in Poseidon now, speaking to you over a network of sorts.

[Oh, right, Viking. He explains more simply:]

Long-distance communication, using the very air. Quite clever, really, and very useful.

So it's like messenger birds? [Invisible messenger birds?] Except instead of carrying a note, they carry sound?

Uh, but I hope I didn't bother you or anything, Your Thunderingness. [oh gods talking to a god is still nerve wracking]

[Thunderingness. Thor isn't sure what to make of that, so he just skips it right over, and goes for a kindly explaination.]

It would probably be easier to compare it to magic than a physical being carrying the message. The transfer is instantaneous, after all, and it can transmit images and written text, as well.

[It isn't magic, it's technology, but... yeah. Viking. Even Thor isn't going to try and explain that just yet.]

I assure you, regardless, I am not bothered in the slightest.

But is is magic, isn't it? How can you compare magic to magic? [You might not be able to get away with not explaining there, Thor.

Still, at least Hiccup is looking incredibly relieved at the fact that Thor isn't angry with him]

Oh, thank the...uh, well, you.

[Really, magic and technology are close enough to Thor that an explanation could be really confusing. Or interesting. Or both.]

Magics are of different types, are they not? But if you truly wish an explanation, I can do my best. It is not my area of expertise.

Oh no, you don't have to do that. Really! I mean, you're a god, and I'm...definitely not. You shouldn't really have to go around explaining anything to me.

But I am here, and you are confused. Is that not a reason? My only fear is that I would confuse you further. The specifics of these machines-- and your book-- have not been made known to me, either, so it would largely be a lot of guesswork.

[Hey, he's a humble god at least. Sort of. Most of the time.]

Well, it just that, you know, you don't usually expect gods to be going around explaining things to mortals and all. Not that I know what gods should do and all!

[Hiccup manages to give a very good impression of a flailing duck right now]

But I can always ask someone else. I'm sure there must be someone around here who can explain things, really.

[The boy is pretty cute, if a little confusing. Thor watches the flailing with a bemused little smile.]

Hiccup, calm yourself, please. I have my faults as well as anyone does, of Asgard or not. And I will take no offense when you clearly mean none, I assure you.

[for a moment there's an awkward pause]

You know, in person you're not really like what I would expect...

Oh? Why, because I do not demand sacrifices and worship out of you?

[He's a bit amused and a bit resigned, with that guess.]

No...well, yes, but not just that. I didn't think you'd be so...human.

[Thor chuckles, at that.]

I am not really very human, but I am flattered that you think so. But I am hardly perfect, just like any other Asgardian or human.

[Considering hey, he likes humans, that's a compliment, right?]

Well, if the gods were perfect, we'd have some pretty boring legends. [sheepishly, Hiccup grins]

[That earns him a laugh.]

Indeed! What would stories be like if there were no mistakes, no faults? As long as the good and the just pull through in the end, right?

[Because Thor does at least still need that, even if he knows he fails along the way.]

I should be going. I have work to do. You are settled in somewhere, then?

Right.

[Hiccup looks like a strange mix of both disappointment and relief at the fact that Thor will be going. On the one hand he really likes talking to Thor - but on the other hand, talking to a god is kind of completely terrifying.]

Ah, we're just staying here in the ship. I don't really think there'd be many other places where Toothless could stay.

I think you might find that is not true, if you come down to Poseidon and look around. Do let me know if you do, I would happily show you the town!

[He's moving now, with the sound of crunching boats a background t his words.]

Uh, sure thing. [Not that Hiccup's sure he'll come to the Poseidon. He's not sure how people would take Toothless.

But it looks like Thor is gone now, so it doesn't matter anyway...]
